  1. Art of the Smokies Screen Saver
  2. Digital Scenic Memories (DSM)
  3.  
  4. Note: Although these screen savers will run on systems capable of 
  5. displaying only 256 color (Super VGA or SVGA), the quality of 
  6. display is enhanced greatly on systems capable of supporting 
  7. 16-bit ("thousands of colors", "High Color") or 24-bit ("millions 
  8. of colors", "True Color"). The quality of display also depends 
  9. on the resolution at which your system is set; the higher the 
  10. resolution, e.g. 1024 x 768 as opposed to 800 x 600, the higher the
  11. quality of display. A good display resolution is 800 x 600 with 
  12. 16-bit color.

  15. Viewing Instructions
  16.  
  17.   After the screen saver has been installed it adds an icon
  18.   to your desktop.  You can double-click on this icon to
  19.   begin viewing your new screen saver or you can follow the 
  20.   steps below to adjust the screen saver's options.

  22.   1) Windows '95/98
  23.      - Click the START button.
  24.      - Choose Settings.
  25.      - Click on Control Panel.
  26.      - In the Control Panel, double-click on the Display icon.
  27.      - In the Display Properties window, click on the Screen Saver tab.
  28.   2) Check the screen saver title to ensure that your new screen 
  29.       saver is selected.
  30.   3) Adjust the screen saver settings as desired by clicking the
  31.       Settings button.
  32.   4) Preview your new screen saver by clicking the Preview
  33.       button. 
  34.   5) After the screen saver is set as desired, click APPLY then OK.

  37. Settings Options
  38. General 
  39.   
  40. Images Interval
  41.      - This feature will adjust the speed that the images will 
  42.        change from one picture to the next.
  43. Size
  44.      - This feature will display images at the original size or to the 
  45.        current screen resolution.
  46. Captions
  47.      - Use this feature to enable/disable captions.  Location and font
  48.        type can  also be changed.   
  49.  
  50. Multimedia
  51. Sounds
  52.      - Use this feature to change the amount of time between 
  53.        each sound played in the screen saver. 
  54.      - To mute the sound, simply check the mute sounds checkbox. 
  55.  
  56. Transitions
  57.      - This feature controls the transition effects from image to image.

  60. Uninstall Instructions

  62.   1) Windows '95/98/2000
  63.      - Click the START button.
  64.      - Choose Settings.
  65.      - Click on Control Panel.
  66.      - In the Control Panel, double-click on the Add/Remove Programs 
  67.        icon.
  68.      - In the Add/Remove Programs Properties window, click on the    
  69.        Install/Uninstall tab.
  70.   2) In the text box, select the Screen Saver you wish to uninstall.
  71.   3) Click the Add/Remove button.
  72.   4) When uninstallation is complete, click OK.
  73.   5) Click OK to exit the Install Program window.

  76. System Requirements

  78.   Windows 95/98/NT/2000.
  79.   - 486 (or higher) system with 8 MB (16 recommended) memory.
  80.   - Monitor capability of 256(SVGA) or true color mode.

  91. 4) Click the Install button.

  107. Troubleshooting
  108.  
  109.     Many users of this product are comfortable in diagnosing 
  110.     and solving common problems on their own. We have included 
  111.     some helpful hints to make this easier.  
  112.  
  113. 1. General
  114.  
  115.  1.1 "DSM" seems to foul up long printouts or other batch 
  116.       jobs on my computer. If you observe this problem, 
  117.       disable the screen saver before beginning the batch 
  118.       job or long printout.  Some software applications 
  119.       and/or hardware platforms have conflicts with 
  120.       screen saver applications.
  121.  
  122.  1.2 "DSM" seems to take a long time to recover when  I 
  123.       move the mouse to try to begin using my computer again.  
  124.       The image decompression software is very memory-intensive.
  125.       In order to properly return control to the system, that memory 
  126.       must be deallocated.  On some older machines, this can be a    
  127.       slower process.
  128.  
  129.  1.3 "DSM" kicks out after only one or two images. Most likely, the 
  130.       mouse has moved imperceptibly. "DSM" is particularly sensitive
  131.       to mouse movements.  We recommend that during an initial test 
  132.       run of "DSM" you run it with the mouse resting upside down to  
  133.       avoid motion.
  134.  
  135. 2. Windows 95/98
  136.  
  137.  2.1 I get a message that reads "Warning! Memory Low!" scrolling 
  138.      across the screen.  
  139.   
  140.      Verify that Windows 95 is managing your swap space for
  141.      you, and that the hard disk drive is not full. Windows
  142.      95 uses a dynamic swap file configuration based on the
  143.      local hard disk.
  144.  
  145.  2.2 The image appears pixilated and rough-edged.
  146.  
  147.      The images in "Digital Scenic Memories" are designed for 
  148.      an optimum display size of 640x480.  In order to convert to
  149.      a higher default resolution (i.e. you have your Windows 95  
  150.      display settings configured for 800x600, 1024x768, etc.) 
  151.      the decompressor must up sample the data. While in the 1024x768 
  152.      mode this may be tolerable, there is some distortion caused 
  153.      by the 5:4 up sampling in 800x600 mode. We recommend that if 
  154.      you are trying to maximize the image quality within "DSM", keep 
  155.      the display at 640x480.  If you are trying to maximize Windows 95 
  156.      functionality, set the display at whatever feels most comfortable 
  157.      for your everyday operations.

  159.  2.3 Many of the colors in the image are missing.
  160.  
  161.      Verify that your display settings are at least 256-color.
  162.      Look in the CONTROL PANEL, under the DISPLAY icon, to view        
  163.      your display properties window.  In the display properties 
  164.      window, click on the SETTINGS tab and check your color palette 
  165.      settings. If your display settings are set at 16-color you will
  166.      not be able to view the images correctly.  Contact your local 
  167.      computer store or the computer manufacturer for assistance in 
  168.      properly upgrading your graphics driver to 256-colors or higher.

  170. 3. Multimedia
  171.  
  172.  3.1 I can't hear the sound playing when the screen saver is running.
  173.  
  174.      Verify that your speakers are on and the volume is up.  
  175.   
  176.      Windows '95/98/NT
  177.      - Click the START button.
  178.      - Choose Programs.
  179.      - Click on Accessories.
  180.      - Click on Multimedia.
  181.      - Double-click on the Windows Media Player icon.
  182.      - Move the slider bar, to the right, to increase the volume.

  184.  3.2 I can't find Windows Media Player.   
  185.  
  186.  Windows Media Player is required to listen to the screen saver sounds.  Install Windows Media Player or Windows 98 or Windows 2000.
